I subscribe to a number of different websites on a variety of topics; including a couple daily digest that I am absolutely addicted to (does anyone actually watch the news daily anymore? Aside from my grandparents…), and every once in a while I stumbled across an article series that pulls me in day after day until it concludes.
Name of Groans from Eater was that series for me.
I don’t regularly read Eater, although I should because a quick glance had me opening half dozen articles on a food, restaurants, and other culinary topics! But this series was special. Over 5 days the writers of Eater reviewed some of the worst restaurant names in the country by different categories, culminating on day 5 with a final bracket of the winners (losers?) to determine which one was really the worst restaurant name in the country.
Eater comments at the bottom of each article that the “32 restaurants included in the bracket-style showdown were culled from a list of hundreds of names submitted by Eater readers and editors over the past year.”
I highly recommend checking out these articles just for some light-hearted, mid-day amusement! They are not long and you can get the idea of the format pretty quickly.
Here are the 5 articles in order for Name of Groans: The Search for the Most Truly Awful Restaurant Name in America –
- Day One: PUNS
- Day Two: The Distressingly Sexual Bracket
- Day Three: Crimes Against Language
- Day Four: Just Really Bad Names
- Day Five: The Winner!
Now I want to hear –
- Did you agree with the winner?
- Do you have any restaurants near you with terrible names?
