I have a love of succulents. I have multiple inside and outside of my house. I lusted after a snake plant for months until I finally talked Adam into going shopping for one (I will save Ulysses’ story for another day) but I knew as soon as I walked into The Art Terrarium in Des Moines that I was not only going to be buying my friend a birthday gift…
Seriously one of my favorite stores in Des Moines. It is quirky, unique, and unassuming. If you have a love of plants and art (or plants or art), definitely check it out if you are in the area!
So back to my visit on June 2nd, I was looking for a birthday gift and found Thomas. I did get my friend a terrarium with a variety of cacti but I brought Thomas back to the office with me, I knew my boyfriend would not appreciate if I brought another succulent into the house…
20 days after I purchased him (and before I ever watered him), my coworkers and I noticed that he had a little hat…
Soon I had to prop him up. He has a weird, wavy extension out the top that was pulling him over so my books kept the weight from making him completely topple over.
By mid-August, he had both slowed down his growth and straightened out. But I still couldn’t remove the books. I water him about once a month now, sometimes more frequently if he is completely dry. I had to invest in a moisture reader for my succulents at home and I periodically bring it in for Thomas too.
But now, it is happening again! Thomas has another little hat poking out the very top of his new growth! The new question is, will he continue growing up and up and up until he hits the ceiling?? I am going to need some bigger books!
My coworker saw this plant on his walk (in Des Moines!! Who knew we had cacti in home landscaping in the midwest??) and thought it looked like Thomas. Maybe this is what he is going to grow into?
If anyone is familiar with cacti, please let me know what I am dealing with! Do I need to let Thomas lay down? Should I repot him so he can spread out? #perplexed #cactiproblems
- Do you have any background in succulents?
- Do you have a green thumb?
- Biggest question: should I name each section something different or is the whole thing Thomas??
